The Two Faces of Atheism:

The two classic visions of the atheist, one, the passive intellectual, the other, the militant activist who fights against the church. In recent history it is the activist that is heard from the most; giving modern atheism a militant non-intellectual face. This is because they provide the sound bite for the media and the fodder that fuels the opposition. History gives us the intellectuals as the philosophers and scientists who are remembered for their accomplishments, many of which came to fruition long after their deaths.

In reality we are all a part of each. It is the philosopher that brings us to the conclusion that there is no god and it is the activist that walks away from the mind numbing ideas of religion.
